The N95/KN95 respirator masks are air-purifying respirators designed to prevent the wearer from inhaling airborne particulates. They do not protect against the inhalation of gases and vapours. The N95/KN95 Respirator Mask has good breathability with a design that does not collapse against the mouth (e.g. duckbill, cup-shaped). Mask harnesses may have head straps or ear loops.
N95/KN95 respirator masks that protect against blood penetration are known as surgical N95 or medical KN95 respirator masks. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in their webpage Frequently Asked Questions about Personal Protective Equipment2, says, “a surgical N95 is recommended only for use by healthcare personnel (HCP) who need protection from both airborne and fluid hazards (e.g., splashes, sprays). These respirators are not used or needed outside of healthcare settings. In times of shortage, only HCP who are working in a sterile field or who may be exposed to high velocity splashes, sprays, or splatters of blood or body fluids should wear these respirators, such as in operative or procedural settings.
