Also referred to as a non-rebreather mask. These masks can deliver up to a FiO2 of 1.00 (100% oxygen), but that is totally dependent on how well the mask is fitted to the patient. Typically, a FiO2 of approximately 0.80 can be expected with these masks. These masks only come in one size per patient population (adult/child). This mask is made from plastic and always has a reservoir bag attached to the bottom of it. The mask uses either 2 or 3 one-way valves. These valves prevent the patient from drawing in room air and also from exhaling back into the reservoir bag that contains pure oxygen from the source. This mask requires at least 12lpm of oxygen with 15+ lpm not being unusual. The amount of oxygen delivered to the mask must be sufficient so that the reservoir bag does not fully collapse on inspiration. These devices should be connected directly to the oxygen source and not to a humidifier. Oxygen tubing with a normal length of 2.1 meters is attached to the mask. Other lengths of tubing may be provided.
