Point of Care (POC) blood gas and pH analyzers are most often used in areas where immediate test results are necessary for prompt and accurate diagnosis and monitoring of treatments, such as the intensive care unit, neonatal/pediatric intensive care unit, emergency department, and operating rooms. These analyzers were developed primarily to reduce the turnaround time for laboratory tests. Typically, tests performed on POC analyzers can be reviewed by clinicians in less than five minutes, whereas the turnaround time for a test sent to a central laboratory can take significantly longer and delay treatment. POC analyzers are also particularly useful in facilities that lack central laboratories as they can perform similar blood sample analyses to provide clinicians with critical information for treatment decisions.
POC analyzer vendors offer proprietary, disposable cartridges that can test for parameters such as pH, partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), lactate, creatinine, and others. Once a cartridge is filled with a blood sample, it is inserted into the POC analyzer for analysis. Vendors offer several types of test cartridges to accommodate facilities with diverse patient populations.
POC analyzers provide automatic surveillance and systematic troubleshooting of instrument malfunctions as well as rapid calculation of results. Most analyzers also have capabilities for automatic calibration and quality control analyses. Calibration is typically performed automatically at regular intervals by solutions in their reagent cartridges. Patient and reagent data can be entered using a keypad, touchscreen, or bar-code scanner. Test results, abnormal values, and system status are displayed on a screen, and data can be printed out or transferred to the facility's data management system for later transfer to a patient's electronic medical record.
