Resuscitator bags, commonly referred to manual resuscitators or self-inflating bags, are intended to provide temporary respiratory support to patients that are unable to adequately support breathing on their own.
These devices are usually manufactured from silicon or rubber products and are available in either disposable (single patient use) or reusable versions. Reusable versions require disassembly, cleaning, sterilization, and re-assembly before it may be used on the next patient. All resuscitator bags are designed to be capable of delivering near 100% oxygen to the patient.
Resuscitator bags are usually used on a short-term basis until the patient can be connected to a ventilator. They are also used while the patient is being transported within or between medical care facilities. These bags usually come in three sizes; adult, pediatric, and infant. It is usual for these devices to come with at least one mask, appropriate for the size of the bag, an oxygen reservoir system to ensure near 100% oxygen delivery, and oxygen connecting tubing to connect the bag to an oxygen source. These devices have universal fittings, allowing them to be connected to any resuscitator mask, endotracheal tube, or tracheal tube.
An optional device that may be connected to the resuscitator bag is the PEEP valve. This valve allows PEEP (Positive End Expiratory Pressure) to be added to the breaths delivered to the patient to increase the arterial oxygen level in their blood.
